Freed from the shackles of the BBC behemoth, Jeremy Paxman seems to be enjoying getting off the fence and telling us what he really thinks. It turns out he claims to be a closet Eurosceptic who believes Europe has been “nothing but trouble for us”, and has been secretly sound all along: “I am in favour of governments getting out of people’s lives. Particularly foreign government. The closer you can take decision-making to the people affected by those decisions, the better.” Speaking at Chalke Valley History Festival, Paxo revealed political leanings for the first time: “I have to be frank, I suppose I am a one-nation Tory, yes.” He also gave the audience his explanation for Newsnight’s shift to the left:
“Look, Newsnight is made by 13-year-olds. It’s perfectly normal when you’re young that you want to change the world. The older you get, the more you realise what a fools’ errand much of that is and that the thing to do is to manage the best you can to the advantage outdoor lighting of as many people as possible.”

June 27, 2014 at 8:26 pm Let’s see, ‘marxist union rats’, ‘traitors who wanted us to be a Soviet satellite’, ‘slaves of Communism’, ‘anti-english, champagne socialist, parasitic filth’. No, despite having re-typed them, the loony remarks make no sense – but remain the same old hard-right BS. Do you work in Room 101 (at Tory HQ) by any chance? ‘
June 27, 2014 at 11:02 am Aren’t One Nation Tories the ones who want to be in the EU and are comfortable with big government? He sounds more like a Thatcherite but maybe he didn’t want to say that out loud.
June 27, 2014 at 11:05 am Reblogged this on Political Pip Spit or Swallow its up to You and commented: I’ve always liked Paxman and I’ve always thought he was a bit of a closet Tory and for my hat trick its reassuring to find I am right with the mental age of the Newsnight clever clogs producers…This bunch of juvenile delinquents are driving Newsnight down hill so fast they’re likely to break the land speed record.
Personally I think they should go the whole hog and give it to Russell Brand complete with anonymous speaker phone and celebrity home telephone numbers (coutesy NOTW — de cuius –of course).

June 27, 2014 at 11:14 am They are trying to jazz newsnight up to appeal to a younger audience so it can compliment all the other shite the BBC does which also tries to appeal to a younger audience. The ageing population which we are told is growing obviously doesn’t matter to them.
