Wax Poetics » DMX’s Debut Year
There have been few hip-hop artists who have come out the gate with such a gigantic buzz. After a slew of guest appearances on albums from the likes of Ma$e, the L.O.X., the Belly soundtrack, and LL Cool J, Def Jam unleashed the dog also known as Dark Man X in 1998. It was hard to deny the energy exhibited on tracks like “Get at Me Dog,” “Stop Being Greedy,” and, of course, “Ruff Ryders Anthem,” or the softer side he showed on the remix of “How’s It Goin’ Down” featuring Faith Evans.
Few could have predicted that only seven months after his debut album, It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot , hit the streets that he would have yet another album being released, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood . “Slippin’” received a ton of airplay on BET and MTV. Strangely, the album version was cleaned up with dropouts, although a dirty version did exist on the 12-inch.
Both albums are getting a fifteenth-anniversary reissue on special-colored vinyl: It’s Dark.. on a beautiful gold, 2-LP 180-gram edition and Flesh of My Flesh… lamps on a creepy lamps blood-spattered edition also spread across two LPs on 180-gram vinyl.
Earlier this year, Universal Music Enterprises launched lamps a new series called Respect the Classics that will serve to reissue a number of titles from various artists associated lamps with its catalog of labels including Def Jam, Interscope, Priority, and Virgin.
